Successful molecular instruments exist that provide syndromic panels for respiratory, gastric and blood culture. How could easy to use cartridge-based instruments be developed for the testing of tissue samples for applications such as oncology to inform treatment decisions? Samples are most commonly FFPE which present challenges for nucleic acid extraction and amplification. We discuss methods of extraction and how these might be incorporated in cartridge-based instruments without increasing hands-on time.
