Advances in sensor technology enable next generation robotics

Sagentia will today be exploring the advanced sensor technology supporting the current robotics upsurge at RoboBusiness in San Jose, CA. Dr. Nicholas Collier, Sagentia’s Chief Technology Officer, will be presenting to leaders from across the global robotics industry on the opportunities and challenges presented by some of the latest sensor technologies in delivering next-generation robotics.

During the presentation, Dr. Collier will explore several current sensor technologies that are enabling robotic systems to navigate complex and changing environments. These include 3D imaging sensors, such as Time of Flight cameras being used for stock picking in warehouses, retro-reflective communications and hyperspectral imaging for use in surgical techniques and operations.

Dr. Collier comments: “There is currently significant interest in the growing capabilities of robotics. Robots are increasingly operating outside their traditional assembly-line settings and are undertaking varied, less predictable tasks, working collaboratively alongside humans. For robots to work in these semi-structured environments they need to be highly aware of their surroundings and so the role of sensor technology is critical. There have been some big advances in this area over the last few years and we are seeing some very exciting developments on the horizon.”
