Breakthrough surgical lighting technology launched at Medica

20 November, 2013

Quaser eLite, a ground-breaking new surgical lighting system incorporating next generation HD LED technology and a unique optical design delivering unprecedented levels of lighting uniformity, color rendition, and intelligent control, will be launched at Medica this week. The technology has been developed jointly by Brandon Medical, an award winning UK medical technology company and Sagentia, a leading technology and product development services company, and builds on Brandon’s patented and highly innovative HD LED technology.

The technology embedded in the Quasar eLite has also been developed for use in general lighting applications – the first of these being an intelligent lighting system developed for hospital ward lighting. This will enable, for the first time, fully controllable, natural lighting to be delivered in general lighting which is optimized to the ambient lighting conditions. The unique technology can be controlled via Bluetooth or an app from a mobile phone, meaning the lights can be changed remotely by patients or healthcare staff. In addition, the new lighting technology can track circadian rhythms, meaning that it mimics natural light and changes color automatically depending on the time of day – significantly improving patient wellbeing and recovery and providing a better working environment for healthcare staff.

Dr Euan Morrison, Head of Advanced Lighting & Optical Technologies at Sagentia, said: “Once again the successful partnership between Brandon Medical and Sagentia has led to the development of some truly ground breaking medical lighting technology. In particular, the optical design incorporated into these products uses an innovative new type of optical element that we have developed which delivers superb beam profiles and also enables our unique solid state focusing approach. The combination of this along with some recent advances which we have made in color rendition using LEDs has delivered a great new technology platform for Brandon Medical.”

Brandon Medical will be demonstrating the new product range at the Medica Exhibition, in Düsseldorf, Germany 20th-23rd November 2013, Hall 13 Stand Number C36.

Graeme Hall, CEO of Brandon Medical, comments: “At Brandon Medical, we are aiming to create truly innovative products that will delight our customers. The new operating theater lights and medical room lights that we’ve designed with Sagentia really meet these goals and we’re already working together on the next new product!”

The development of the technology embedded in these products has been part funded by the European Framework 7 program. The aim of Project Hercules© is to further develop existing high definition LED lighting technology for medical AND general lighting applications. Sagentia has been the lead technology research provider in the consortium as inventor of the original HD LED technology and with its broad understanding of all the technology aspects involved. It has driven the research into all the fundamental technology aspects including optics, materials, electronics and system design, as well as undertaking the modeling, testing, analysis and concept development. Project Hercules brings together an international consortium of small to medium enterprises and R&D companies, including Brandon Medical, Sagentia, DTMCumsa, Synergy Medical, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and TWI.
